Determination of the quality of compressed gases (both industrial and breathable)

In order to comply with regulatory requirements or within the scope of an accreditation or certification protocol, it is necessary to control the quality of compressed gas at either the outlet of a production unit (compressor, bottle, cryogenic tank) or at one or more distribution network points.

Services proposed

The services proposed under this heading pertain to controlling the quality of compressed gases at the outlet of a production unit and/or along a distribution network, which necessitates intervening at the site of gas use. In situ sampling can nonetheless be performed for subsequent analysis in the laboratory, in particular when the research effort is focused on purity.

Resources available

To carry out such missions, LNE is equipped with measurement and sampling instruments that enable evaluating the quality of measured compressed gases (air, nitrogen, oxygen). Moreover, the Laboratory has at its disposal the sampling equipment necessary to evaluate, in the laboratory, the bacteriological cleanliness and, if applicable, total condensed hydrocarbons. The instruments used to conduct these measurements are listed below.

Control-related resources deployed by LNE:

Setting Analyzers Measurement range
CO (ppmv) Infrared Analyzer 0.0 to 50.0
CO2 (ppmv)

Infrared Analyzer

0 to 1,000
SO2 (ppbv) UV Fluorescence Analyzer 0 to 10,000
NOx (ppbv) Luminescence Chemistry Analyzer 0 to 10,000
N2 (%) Paramagnetic or chromatography Analyzer By difference or comparison
O2 (%) Paramagnetic Analyzer 0.0 to 100.0
Humidity Capacitive Probe Hygrometer -80° to +20°C (pressurized)
Oils (mg/m3) FTIR method Class 1 through 4
Particles (Nb/m3) Optical particle counter 0.1 to 10 µm

Applicable regulations

Standards relative to medicinal air, breathable air, medical gas distribution systems, compressed gases for industrial uses and/or general purposes, BPF, European pharmacopeia, etc.

Products involved

All production units and distribution networks requiring control of all or some of the following settings:

  • Gaseous pollutants,
  • Solid particles,
  • Bio-contaminants,
  • Humidity (hygrometry),
  • Oils (heavy, condensed hydrocarbons).

LNE clients testify

[…] la réactivité du LNE dans la gestion quotidienne des plannings nous est très précieuse et surtout la rapidité de transmission des informations lorsqu’il y a des anomalies lors des mesures sur site, ce qui est crucial pour nous.
