LNE-LiB01 Black mass from Lithium batteries
Certified “black mass” reference material for critical elements: lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper. Designed for evaluating “black mass” analytical methods in the context of electric battery recycling and EU Regulation 2023/1542. Available in powder form.
Detailed description
This certified reference material consists of crushed black mass derived from several whole lithium-ion battery cells for electric vehicles. The material is primarily intended for use in evaluating the performance of black mass analysis methods in the context of electric battery recycling and EU Regulation 2023/1542 on batteries and battery waste. This material is certified for the concentrations (dry weight) of Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, and Copper with the following values:
Lithium (Li): 29 700 mg/kg
Cobalt (Co): 58 200 mg/kg
Nickel (Ni): 114 600 mg/kg
Copper (Cu): 109 600 mg/kg
The certificate accompanying the reference material specifies the uncertainties associated with the certified values, which are in the range of 10 to 15 % (expanded uncertainties), depending on the chemical element in concern, as well as the conditions for determining the moisture content.
The material was characterized by microwave digestion and analysis via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) using the standard addition, validated by an interlaboratory comparison. The certified values and their associated uncertainties are traceable to the SI (International System of Units). This material has been prepared and certified in accordance with the recommendations of ISO 33405 (formerly ISO Guide 35).
Packaging and Storage
