A public service mission

Since 1997, the LNE's public service mission has been set out in a contract of objectives signed every four years with the French government. This contract involves a financial commitment by the State in the form of annual subsidies. Faced with constantly evolving societal challenges (citizen and consumer protection, health and safety, environmental protection), the LNE supports the implementation of public policies:

• as a reference laboratory for industry in the field of metrology;
• by pursuing its scientific and technical development in order to anticipate the needs for measurement arising from technological developments and the new expectations of society;
• by participating in the development of standards and regulations at the national, European and international levels, and by taking part in market surveillance.

The LNE also supports manufacturers in their competitiveness and innovation strategies through its 5 core businesses:

This multi-disciplinary approach enables the LNE to provide bespoke technical, regulatory and scientific solutions to a wide range of industries, including health, energy, defence, construction and packaging.

2021-2024 Objectives and performance contract

In 2021, the LNE signed a new objectives and performance contract for 2021-2024. It is based on 4 major commitments that aim to:

1. Place France's national metrology network among the world leaders in the sector
2. Develop tools to help businesses compete and make the world a safer place
3. Sustain specific actions in support of public policies
4. Improve performance management
