A public service mission
Since 1997, the LNE's public service mission has been set out in a contract of objectives signed every four years with the French government. This contract involves a financial commitment by the State in the form of annual subsidies. Faced with constantly evolving societal challenges (citizen and consumer protection, health and safety, environmental protection), the LNE supports the implementation of public policies:
- as a reference laboratory for industry in the field of metrology;
- by pursuing its scientific and technical development in order to anticipate the needs for measurement arising from technological developments and the new expectations of society;
- by participating in the development of standards and regulations at the national, European and international levels, and by taking part in market surveillance.

2025-2029 Objectives and Performance Contract
In 2025, the LNE signed a new objectives and performance contract for 2025-2029. This contract is based on four major commitments:
- The French National Metrology Network among the world leaders, supporting businesses and society
- Developing tools to promote business competitiveness and a safer world
- Sustaining specific actions to support public policies
- Improving management and performance
