A public industrial and commercial establishment (EPIC) since 10 January 1978 (Scrivener law), the LNE is placed under the supervision of the Ministry of the Economy and Finance in charge of Industry.

Board of Directors

The LNE is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of representatives of several ministries, qualified figures from the worlds of science, industry, business and civil society, and employee directors. It is chaired by a person chosen from among its members and appointed by decree.

The functions and composition of the LNE's Board of Directors are set out in the official regulations (Law no. 78-23 of 10/01/78 and Decree no. 2005-49 of 25/01/2005) establishing the Laboratory's status and governing its operations. It decides on the LNE's annual budget, including major investments and long-term strategic orientations.

Thomas Grenon was appointed Director General by decree in April 2016 and is the institution's legal representative and head of departments.

The Board of Directors meets at least 3 times a year in plenary sessions.

Strategic Orientation Council (COS)

The COS has a consultative role and is a forum for dialogue between the LNE and industrial or economic players and representatives of civil society who are recognised for their expertise or representativeness. The COS's role is to guide the LNE's strategy by promoting discussion of societal issues and challenges. The COS meets around twice a year and discusses key issues relating to the national recovery strategy (including quantum technologies, environment and pollution, AI and additive manufacturing).

Executive Committee (ComEx)

The Executive Committee is responsible for managing the LNE in line with its mission and the guidelines laid down by the Board of Directors. It meets every week under the chairmanship of the Managing Director and is made up of the directors in charge of the LNE's main divisions. It is a strategic decision-making body responsible for implementing actions, particularly in the areas of marketing and sales, R&D, human resources, communication and investment. These actions aim to achieve the objectives set out in the strategic guidelines.
