Buffer solution for seawater pH
Tris/Tris-HCl buffer solution in artificial seawater matrix (nominal pHT 8.1 or 7.6 at 25°C, U +/- 0.005) used as a standard for spectrophotometric pH measurements or as QA/QC for method validation.
Detailed description
Use of the marine pH buffer solution
Measuring pHT to monitor ocean acidification
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, more than a quarter of the carbon dioxide emissions generated by human activities have been absorbed by the oceans. However, the dissolution of CO2 in seawater is directly responsible for increasing its acidity, having direct consequences on the marine biodiversity.
The expected data quality must allow long-term trends to be assessed with a high level of confidence. Indeed, in order to measure changes due to ocean acidification, very small variations in pH must be able to be measured. Over the past 100 years, the pH has decreased by 0.1, which corresponds to an increase in acidity of about 30%. The global ocean acidification observation network, GOA-ON, requires an uncertainty of 0.003 on pHT measurement results for climate monitoring of ocean acidification.
Monitoring these small variations requires reliable and precise observations to obtain high-quality data that are comparable in space and time. To meet this need, LNE has applied its expertise in the characterization of buffer solutions for pH measurement to develop a reference material in the form of a Tris/Tris-HCl buffer solution in an artificial seawater matrix.
Characteristics
Reference materials characterized for pH:
- Tris-Tris/HCl in artificial seawater matrix (pH 8.1xx and 7.6xxx, U = 0.005)
- These materials can be used as standards for spectrophotometric pH measurements or as QA/QC for method validation.
- They are delivered with a calibration certificate specifying the pH value and the associated uncertainty.
