Detailed description

Certified Reference Material (CRM) of Ethanol in Water solutions

Our certified solutions, Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), are produced by volumetric method by mixing a mass of ethanol in deionized water.

They are delivered with a COFRAC certificate specifying the concentration of Ethanol in water (g/L) and associated uncertainty of the CRM.

LNE is accredited by COFRAC to manufacture CRMs according to the international standard NF EN ISO 17034 – General requirements for the competence of reference material producers

Accreditation no. 2-2031

Use of Certified Solutions (CRM)

These certified Ethanol in Water solutions can be used for the calibration, verification or production control of breathalyzers.

Manufacturing

All of our reference of Ethanol in Water solutions are produced on demand with a concentration expressed in grams of alcohol per liter of water. They are shipped within 3 weeks of receipt of order.

How to convert an alcohol concentration per liter of air into an alcohol concentration per liter of water

Let γ(t) be the mass concentration of ethanol of an aqueous solution of ethanol. When air is bubbled through such a solution, the mass concentration β(t) of ethanol in the produced test gas is given by the following formula: 𝛽(𝑡) = 0.04145 × 10−3 × 𝛾(𝑡) × 𝑒(0.06583∗ 𝑡)      (Dubowski’s formula)

with:

  • β(t) mass concentration of ethanol in the test gas at a given temperature t in mg/L
  • 0.04145 × 10-3 and 0.06583 conventional Dubowski coefficients
  • γ(t) mass concentration of ethanol in the aqueous solution at a given temperature in mg/L
  • t temperature of solution and test gas in °C

For t = 34 °C the equation can be simplified to:

  • β(34) = 0.38866 × 10-3 ×γ(34)

Example: if you want an ethanol concentration in the air equal to 0.400 mg/L, Dubowski's formula gives an ethanol concentration in the water equal to 1.0292 g/L (for t= 34 °C).
