Thermal characterization of materials

Whether you are an industrial company or a research lab, to understand the thermal behavior of the materials you use, you need reliable data to feed a model, or to verify the suitability of these materials for a specific application. LNE allows you to measure their thermal and radiative properties over a wide temperature range (-140 to 2000°C).

In sectors as critical as aerospace, defense, nuclear or transportation, you need reliable and accurate data on the thermal properties of your materials, in order to:

  • provide parameters for numerical simulation tools, which are essential at the design stage,
  • check their suitability for your specific applications,
  • Scale and then safely operate the systems in which they are integrated.

To meet this need, LNE has developed a metrological platform dedicated to the characterization of the thermophysical properties of various types of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, etc.) over a wide temperature range (from -140 °C to 2000 °C) and benefits from a proven experience of the applications and constraints of these critical sectors.

Services offered

To characterize a material from a thermal point of view, LNE offers a wide range of services:

  • Measurement of mass heat capacity (23°C to 2000°C)
  • Measurement of the coefficient of thermal expansion (between -140°C and 2000°C)
  • Measurement of thermal diffusivity (23°C to 2000°C)
  • Determination of the thermal conductivity of conductive and medium-conductive materials (from 0.2 W.m-1. K-1) by indirect method (23°C to 2000°C)
  • Measurement of induction time to oxidation
  • DSC (Temperature and Enthalpy of Fusion) Differential Thermal Analysis
  • Emissivity measurement
  • Solar absorption factor measurement
  • Measurement of the spectral reflectance factor
Determining the conductivity of a material

The thermal conductivity is equal to the product of three quantities:

Density x Mass Heat Capacity x Thermal Diffusivity

Our service therefore includes the measurements of these three quantities.
