ISO 17025 - LNE at the forefront of the evolution of the standard

A new version of the ISO 17025 standard, related to the competence requirements for testing and calibration laboratories, was published at the end of 2017.

In addition to having actively participated in the evolution of this standard, LNE puts its expertise in the field at the service of the industry.

LNE, expert in the 17025 standard

In 2015, a revision of ISO/IEC 17025 was launched within an ISO international standardization group (ISO/CASCO/WG44). Since the revision was launched, LNE, as a recognized expert in standardization, has been deeply involved in this work. Indeed, for several years, LNE has involved many of its experts in standardisation working groups to guarantee the traceability of the measurements defined in the standards and the validation of the associated measurement methods.

LNE's participation in international standardization meetings has enabled the needs of French laboratories to be brought up to date, proposals formulated and decisions influenced so that these positions can be taken into account by the 70 voting experts on the ISO working group. Its strong involvement in international normative activities allows LNE to have today a very good knowledge of the evolutions of the new standard and beyond the text, of the intentions of the drafters.

Today, LNE puts all its skills at the service of its customers in order to provide them with the best possible support. LNE experts continue to put all their know-how on the 17025 standard at the service of testing and calibration laboratories by offering training and technical support.

Through this strong involvement LNE demonstrates its great involvement in standardization with nearly a hundred technical experts involved in standardization committees at French, European and international levels. Thanks to its position in standardization, LNE is involved in normative research projects whose objective is to transfer the results of standardization research.

Thomas Grenon, General Director of LNE

ISO/IEC 17025 is an international standard which defines the competence requirements for testing and calibration laboratories including not only requirements on the organization but also on the technical suitability of the laboratory (personnel, facilities, testing and calibration methods, method validation, measurement traceability, sampling...). Thus laboratories use this standard to develop a quality management system and organize their technical activities to produce valid results.

Evolutions of the standard

After 3 years of work, the new version of the ISO/IEC 17025 standard applicable to all testing and calibration analysis laboratories (except medical biology laboratories) was published at the end of 2017.

The new version of the standard aims to improve the quality of service provided by laboratories to their customers and prime contractors, and to take their needs into account. To this end, the new version of ISO 17025 introduces in particular the process approach and the consideration of risks and opportunities. It also clarifies the relationship between the customer and the laboratory, for example by requesting the earliest possible definition of conformity decision rules and the taking into account of measurement uncertainty.
