Rear load carriers and roof load carriers: two major regulatory changes

The publication by the end of 2025 of the ISO 6563:2025 standard relating to rear load carriers for wheeled vehicles, as well as the publication in October 2025 of amendment 1 of the ISO 11154:2023 standard relating to roof load carriers, will introduce new technical requirements and specific test methodologies.

New tests to meet regulatory requirements

These developments will have a direct impact on product design, validation processes and the conformity of load carriers placed on the market.

The 2023 version of ISO 11154, which superseded the 2006 edition, already introduced adjustments to the static test parameters and added new tests, including the avoidance test and the emergency braking test. Amendment 1 to ISO 11154:2023, published in October 2025, introduces several changes, including modifications to the corrosion test.

The new ISO 6563:2025, which will cancel and replace the XP R 18-904-4:2008 standard, will be available in early 2026. Its main changes involve a revision of the static test parameters (forces to be applied, application time, acceptance criteria) as well as the addition of new tests, such as:

  • the avoidance test,
  • the emergency braking test,
  • the City Crash Test.

LNE is able to support the manufacturers and equipment suppliers concerned in the analysis of these developments and in carrying out the tests associated with these new requirements.
