COVID-19, metrology at the service of the development of safe and effective methods and products

To avoid false hopes of vaccines, drugs, means of detection and or protection (coating of materials...) against Covid-19 or its effects, there is no other solution than to be able to evaluate these products on a robust and comparable basis. This requires the harmonisation of methodologies and an adequate metrological framework.

Launch of several international initiatives

At the international level, the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS) supports world trade in products dependent on advanced materials technologies, through International collaborative projects aimed at providing the technical basis for harmonized measurements, testing, specifications, and standards. LNE is the French representative in this international pre-standardization network created in 1982 at a G7 summit in Versailles.

Several initiatives on Covid-19 have just been launched to improve the repeatability and reproducibility of the methods and products currently developped, and ultimately to ensure the quality, evaluation and delivery of safe, high-performance products.

Details of the various projects and calls for Expressions of Interest are available at the links below:

  1. Cross-validation of an integrated, phage-derived platform as an open source reference standard for the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 (pdf)
  2. Physicochemical profiling of virus-like particles as reference materials for vaccine development and virus particle diagnosis (pdf)
  3. International call for inter laboratory comparisons (ILC) in response to the COVID 19 pandemic (pdf)
